What, in your experience, demands more will power: losing weight or bulking up?

Well for me, I had to focus on bulking up! It never felt like a struggle of will power though, because I wanted it so badly. I was always the smallest player on every team, growing up. I spent my childhood researching and studying how to get bigger and stronger. The gym was also my outlet for stress, and it became my safe haven from 16 years old.

How would you advise someone to train their will power?

Set a goal! First make it a big goal, and then break it down into smaller goals that help lead you to the big one. Also, tell your friends and family about it. If you’re struggling with something, don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you can be honest with yourself and honest with others, you will figure out how to train your willpower. And if you don’t, it simply means that you just don’t want it badly enough.

Why do you think some people choose NOT to exercise and make healthy choices?

Everyone has a different list of priorities. Health and fitness is certainly on everyone’s list, but sometimes it’s at the bottom. I enjoy inspiring and being inspired by like-minded individuals that put health and fitness in their top 3. But I also enjoy motivating people who hold health and fitness in a lower regard, to bump up the priority.

True or False: Will power is the most important part of being in great shape.

False. I believe it’s a mindset, not a power struggle, which helps you stay in great shape. I WANT to exercise. I WANT to eat healthy. If every decision I made was forcing myself to do something I didn’t want to, I would be a very unhappy person, which in itself… is extremely unhealthy.

Do you find a certain type of training to require more will power than others (endurance, hypertrophy, strength building, fat loss, etc.)?

Monotonous cardio! To me, it’s such a bore to get on a bike that doesn’t go anywhere, stairs that never end, or a walkway that doesn’t lead anywhere. I try to stick to other activities that engage my mind as well as my cardiovascular system.
