Barbecue Sauce Recipe

Almost everyone enjoys barbecue. Any type of meat, whether chicken, pork, beef, fish or lamb can be used for grilling. You can buy a barbecue sauce in the market in the condiment section of a grocery or you can make your own homemade barbecue sauce.  In this way, you can adjust the flavor according to your liking.

In making your own barbecue sauce recipe, you have to remember that balance of flavor is very important. There must be some saltiness, tartness, sweetness, and spiciness in the flavor of the barbecue sauce. One flavor should not overpower the other flavors.

An Easy to Do Barbecue Sauce Recipe

1)      Sauté an onion, diced green bell peppers, and jalapeno pepper in a sauce pan. Do not caramelize the onion. Sauté them for about five minutes when the onion turns translucent in color.

2)      Add 28 ounces of tomato puree. You can get a good quality tomato puree at a local store.

3)      Add in two cups of tomato catsup.

4)      Add ¾ cup lemon juice and 1 cup of cider vinegar. These two ingredients will add tartness or sourness to your barbecue sauce recipe.

5)      Add in ¼ cup mustard. You can use any kind of mustard – Dijon, regular mustard, etc.

6)      Add in ½ to 2/3 cup of Worcestershire sauce for saltiness.

7)      Add ¼ cup cayenne pepper for more kick.

8)      Add some sweetness into this barbecue sauce recipe by adding in ½ cup brown sugar and ¼ cup molasses.

9)      Add some more seasonings like salt and pepper, all spice, cumin powder, and chili powder.

10)   Bring everything to a boil. You do not have to reduce the sauce in half. Once it starts to boil, lower the heat and simmer for ten minutes.

11)   Transfer the sauce in a container and allow to cool and to rest for about thirty minutes. This barbecue sauce recipe would taste better if allowed to rest. The ingredients will incorporate resulting in a bolder and tastier barbecue sauce.

12)   If you are cooking chicken or pork or any other meat, this homemade barbecue sauce will add so much flavor to the dish. The combination of the four flavors is perfect for any grilled meat.

13)   You can use this sauce as a marinade for your meat. Marinate any type of meat for at least two hours or overnight for a tastier meat. But if you do not wish to marinate your meat, you can brush this sauce on top of the cooked meat and would taste as good.

This is a very basic barbecue sauce. You can always play around with it by adding more ingredients for an added layer of taste and texture. If you want it spicier, you can add some more jalapeno pepper. You can even add some jams, like guava jam, to add sweetness and a fruity taste to your barbecue sauce. You can also add in fruit juices to your barbecue sauce. Experiment with your culinary skills by adding ingredients to this barbecue sauce.
