Most men will treat it as a compliment when someone calls them “the modern day Casanova”. Being called as such means that you have charm and women couldn’t resist you. It could also mean that you’re a sensual person. As a philosopher, he also had some very interesting beliefs. Read on to better understand the timeless charm of Casanova.

There is so much that can be learned from this charming and charismatic subject. Interestingly enough, most of his principles still apply today. While he was a womanizer, he never forced or disrespected women. Yes, his actions would lead to things that were wrong like sleeping with married women; however, it was never through trickery or deceit. Casanova was a gentleman and rather than approaching women with aggression and animalistic intentions, he remained romantic and respectful. If there is one takeaway on the romantic life of Casanova, think of it this way: after an evening with Casanova, his conquests wouldn’t feel hurt, offended, or the need to talk badly about him.

A modern Casanova is not the man staring at women dancing on the bar. He is the man who will compliment the sad girl in the corner because it would make her evening. A modern Casanova doesn’t buy women drinks to get them drunk, he does so for the opportunity to give a toast.

The Early Life of Casanova

giacomo casanova

His full name is Giacomo Girolamo Casanova. His parents were Gaetano Giuseppe, and actor and dancer, and Zanetta Farussi, an actress. You could say that he had the privilege of a good pedigree.

He was molded early in life since he was born in Venice. Back then, it was considered as the pleasure capital of Europe, and this meant widespread social vices like gambling and women. In fact, politicians encouraged these social vices in order to draw tourists in. Casanova absorbed the environment and he lived it, and this made him the perfect representative of the city.

Needless to say, he had a very uncommon childhood. This is especially true since he was sent to a boarding house at the tender age of 9. He felt neglected, especially with the dreadful environment of the boarding house. He moved in with a priest, Abbé Gozzi, who happened to be his primary instructor. The priest was living with his family, and it was the first time that Casanova had an encounter with the opposite sex. His sexual awakening happened at the age of 11, when Bettina, the priest’s younger sister, fondled him. He was smitten with her charm, and he spent all his life feeling attached to Bettina and her family.

Casanova The Philosopher

He was also a sought-after philosopher, having studied moral philosophy. It also helped that he had brief careers in the church, where he became a scapegoat for a scandal, and the military, which he later on abandoned for being “boring”.

It also helped that he had a lot of life lessons, including the lessons he learned from being a professional gambler. He also had a career in politics, working as a legal assistant for a senator.

He himself believed that he lived a life of a philosopher. According to historians, his last words just before he died on June 4, 1798, were “I have lived as a philosopher and I die as a Christian”.

Casanova The Seducer

Of course, everybody knows that Casanova was a seducer. He was a well-known womanizer, who had very intricate and complex affairs with a lot of women. He was known for “saving” attractive women from jealous lovers, seducing them into showing him their “gratitude”.

He didn’t need to force women into bed with him. He also didn’t need alcohol. One of his beliefs is that seducing women is all about being attentive and doing small favors. He was also known as a sweet talker, using speech to seduce women.

Now, the term Casanova is an established term in the English language. Being a known seducer and womanizer, the term now means a “lover”, unfortunately, an unscrupulous and promiscuous one.
