Surely you’ve noticed a new hair care product that’s been becoming an alternative option for some people. When is it advisable to use dry shampoo? What is it for, anyway?

Simply because a new product is trending doesn’t mean you have to use it. Dry shampoo has its uses, though. Here are some things you need to know about it.

  • Dry shampoos are manufactured and sold in the powder or coarse-textured cream form.
  • The product absorbs oil so it’s perfect for people with unusually oily hair and scalp, and especially for those who can’t shower for more than a couple of days.
  • Dry shampoo isn’t intended to replace showering which removes oil and dirt.
  • Long-haired men find dry shampoo useful in providing a mild hold to their hair. Take note that here, dry shampoo is used on clean hair to achieve a level of volume and manageability to long hair.
  • Dry shampoos are manufactured in various formulations, scents, and packaging. There are two brands which are chemical-based, but with mild scents. Baptiste costs $6.29 per 6.71-oz product, while Psssst is priced at $3.39 per 1.75-oz product.
  • There is a product called Quicksand which is very similar to dry shampoo. Quicksand by Hanz de Fuko is now available in the market at $17.50 per 2-oz bottle. It provides a stronger hold than dry shampoo and comes from natural ingredients.
  • A much healthier, but also pricier, dry shampoo formulation is offered by Alder New York. It’s all-natural, with ingredients that include herbs and essential oils, kaolin clay and rice powder.

Apart from the price tag, read the fine labels when you buy your next dry shampoo. There’s more to the powder than meets the eye.
