When a father and son began digging in their backyard together, they quickly came across something strange. As they dug, they noticed a strange object deep in the ground. The two of them decided to take a look and see what it was that was hidden in their backyard. However, things quickly took a scary turn when they realized that they would have to call the police…
20. Backyard Work
It was a beautiful sunny day in April when Dom Lowe decided to get started on some backyard work in his home in Pensford, England. Lowe had moved to England from Los Angeles in order to work as a managing director at a brewery. However, ever since he retired, Lowe has taken on DIY backyard work to keep himself busy.
19. Building A Fence
Recently, Lowe had decided to work on building a fence in his backyard in order to keep his garden safe. So he enlisted the help of his son, Jon, to get started on the fence. The two of them began to dig around in order to create a space for the fence to go in.
18. Digging Around
As the two men began to dig around in the backyard they came across something very strange. As they moved the soil around, they noticed a strange opening which Dom described as a “cesspit.” The two men’s curiosity was immediately piqued and they decided to check out the mysterious opening.
17. Random Objects
The men continued to shuffle dirt around and began to find a bunch of random objects buried in the ground. It was obvious that these objects had been deliberately placed there. So they continued to keep digging and abandoned their original project in the process.
16. Buried Away
As Dom began to look the objects over, he noticed that they were ordinary household items. Some of the items included glass bottles, a colander, and an old fashioned metal iron. However, the men knew that there was still more to find in the ground.
15. The Strangest Discovery
As the men continued to dig. they finally came across an oxidized piece of metal that had been buried along with all of the other objects. At first, the two men couldn’t quite understand what the object was. However, upon closer inspection, they realized that it greatly resembled a bomb.
14. World War II
It was at this moment that Dom began to piece everything together. During World War II, the area was heavily bombed. It seems that the object that the men had found could be a bomb after all. This would also explain all of the old household items that they had just discovered.
13. One More Odd Finding
However, the men didn’t want to hold off on their fence project any longer, so Jon decided to give the hole one last look. He was shocked when he discovered another odd object that looked exactly like the fin of the tail-end of a bomb. So Jon brought the object over to his father to get some clarity on what it could be.
12. Bomb Parts
“Jon didn’t know what it was. But then I said, ‘That looks like part of a bomb to me,’” Dom told the Bristol Post. “He handed it over straight away.” The object seemed to be pretty much in tact and to this day it seemed to have not have detonated. But, how on earth did it get in their backyard?
11. Most Bombed City
Dom was more than sure that the bomb was there from World War II as Bristol had been one of the most bombed cities in England. So, Dom had figured out where the bomb had come from but there was still a lingering question in the area: was it dangerous? “To be honest, there was no panic,” Dom told Bristol Post.
10. Rolling Off
At that point, the two men began to think over their options. Should they alert the authorities to their findings? Could the bomb go off at any minute? It was at this moment that Dom had carefully placed the bomb onto the ground where they had all of their fence material. However, the men quickly ducked for cover when the bomb began to roll off…
9. Ducking For Cover
Once Dom and Jon saw the bomb roll off, they quickly ducked for cover. After all, they had no idea if the bomb was still active or not.“It rolled off, and then we ran for cover; nothing happened though,” Dom told Bristol Post. However, at this point, the men knew they no longer wanted to play around with the bomb without professional help.
8. Calling The Police
Jon quickly gave the police a call and explained the situation to them. Soon enough, two officers from the Avon and Somerset Police force came to check out the scene. The two officers warned Dom & Jon to stay clear of the area until the bomb disposal squad arrived. That’s when a member of the Royal Logistic Corps bomb disposal unit arrived.
7. Scoping The Area
The professional began to inspect the rest of the backyard area in order to see if there were any more buried parts of the bomb. He also confirmed to Dom that he had been correct all along to assume that it was a bomb part. The Lowes had unassumingly unearthed a genuine Luftwaffe incendiary bomb.
6. X-Ray Scan
Now that it was determined that it was a part of a bomb, the professional had to begin his x-ray scan of it. He had to see if it was still a threat and if it could detonate on them. Once the x-ray was completed the delivered the results to Dom and Jon.
The bomb parts showed up clear in the X-ray, which meant that they were totally harmless. There was no chance of any of the parts exploding on them. Still, the Lowes didn’t want to take any chances earlier and it was smart of them to run and duck when the bomb part had rolled off.
4. Empty Shells
However, Dom and Jon still wanted to know how and why the bomb had ended up in their backyard. Well, the Royal Logistics Corp had a perfectly logical answer for them. It seems that the Germans would often drop empty shells among the live ones. But why would they do this?
3. Making It Harder
So why would the Germans drop a bunch of empty bomb shells in the midst of lives ones? Well, it was all a ploy to make the cleanup process harder after the air raids took place. This was a way for them to make the situation more stressful on everyone.
Once all of the x-rays had been done and the area was cleared, the bomb squad and the officers decided to let the Lowes keep the parts of the bomb as a momento. After all, they had dug out the parts and they weren’t a danger to anyone anyway. The men were happy to be able to keep such an interesting piece of history in their home.
1. Amazing Find
It just goes to show you that you never know what you’ll find lingering in your backyard. The Lowes had no idea that their small DIY project would turn into a massive history lesson. This truly was a blast from the past!
