Holes on your drywall can’t be helped especially if you do lots of crazy things in your house. Instead of hiring someone to fix drywall holes in your apartment, you can simply fix it yourself with simple DIY repairs. The first thing you need to do is to figure out the tools to use in this kind of home repair. Here are the tools you need to patch up drywall holes.

  • Utility knife
  • Pencil
  • Keyhole saw
  • Measuring tape
  • Scrap wood
  • Electric screwdriver
  • Mesh nylon tape
  • Spackle or joint compound
  • Sand paper
  • Drywall knives

Since drywall holes are irregularly shaped, you will need to square off the drywall hole first. This way, you can easily make a drywall patch to fix drywall holes. To do this, you need to use a pencil and something with a straight edge. Just make a perfect square around the drywall hole.

After making a square around the drywall hole, use the utility knife to make a pass to score the hole. Then, you can finish the cut by piercing the keyhole saw on one corner of the square and running the sides. This doesn’t require a lot of skills – just make sure the line is straight. So, what’s next?

The Backing Plate

The backing plate is a piece of wood you use to fix drywall holes. It serves as the material that holds the drywall patch that you’re going to use. It can be any kind of scrap wood, but make sure it’s hard and will not break when you attach the drywall patch. The backing must be longer in height, but shorter in width compared to the square hole. Before attaching the backing plate, screw it in the middle so you can have something to hold on to.

After putting a screw in the middle of the backing plate, put it behind the square hole. Since it is longer in height, you can attach it behind the drywall by putting a screw in the lower and upper area where you can find the excess of the backing plate. Now, you can measure the square hole and transfer the measurement to the drywall piece that you will use to make the patch.

Patching the Drywall Hole

Now that you have the drywall patch, you can attach it on the hole using the screwdriver. Cover the edges of the patch with the mesh nylon tape. This serves as a material that bridges the gap between the drywall and the patch. Professionals use a spackle or a joint compound to fix drywall holes properly. To apply these materials, you need two drywall knives.

One drywall knife will serve as a pallet, and the other one will be your working tool. You can work on your own technique in finishing the hole, but it’s very important to know how to apply the spackle or joint compound properly. To fix drywall holes properly using a spackle, apply three layers – one layer every 12 hours. Once the third layer dries up, you can finish everything using a 200-400 grit sand paper. When there are drywall holes in your house or apartment, you can be the man for the job now.
