Foods that Are Good For the Liver

You’re probably plenty familiar with foods (or drinks) that are not good for your liver, but do you know about the things that are? Might as well focus on the positive some of the time here. When we eat food or drinks that are full of toxins or processed ingredients it puts an increase on the amount of work that the liver needs to do. Too much just leads to overwork.

But some foods are actually good for the liver, and adding these to your diet on a regular basis might be able to help you out quite a bit.

Garlic may be able to activate enzymes in the liver that will encourage it to start flushing out toxins. To get more garlic in your diet you can literally munch on some if you can handle the taste, but you can also cook it into most of your favorite savory dishes. Supplements help as well.

Grapefruits are a very good source of vitamin C which is a natural antioxidant. High levels of vitamin C can help with the cleansing of the liver. Grapefruits can be tasty eaten on their own like a peeled orange, or sliced in half and eaten with a spoon. Extract made from the seeds of grapefruits is also known to anti inflammatory and antibacterial properties when taken as a supplement.

Green Tea

Green Tea is a good source of antioxidants called catechins, which might be able to assist with the liver function. Green tea is also a milder source of caffeine than downing coffee all day, so it can be a good option for switching things up in that regard as well. Green tea might be able to help jumpstart the body into fat burning mode as well if weight loss is as interest.

Leafy Green Vegetables

We’re told to eat our vegetables from a young age simply because they are truly very good for us. Leafy green vegetables are high in plant chlorophylls, which help to get toxins out of the blood stream and then out of the body. Greens can be eaten cooked, raw, or juiced, and all of those forms will give you different benefits depending on which vegetable it is. Try to mix up the types of leafy greens that you get for getting the most benefit to the body. The more variety you can eat, the more nutrients you can get as well.

Apples are high in the fiber pectin which is particularly good at clearing out the digestive tract. This can help to move along some of the toxins in there and support the liver during its own cleaning process.

Lemons and Limes

Lemons and limes are of course citrus fruits that are very high in vitamin C. Some people like to help stimulate the liver by drinking a glass of water with lemon juice in the morning.
