What would you do if you were swimming in a lake and happened across an amazing discovery? Well, that’s exactly what happened to one little girl. While on a family vacation, she decided to go out for a swim. However, she had no idea that she would soon happen upon an item that would cause people to start calling her ‘The King of Sweden’.
20. Family Vacation
Back in July 2018, the Vanacek family decided to enjoy a nice family vacation over at their holiday home in Tånnö, southern Sweden. The area, unfortunately, had been suffering with some droughts and the water levels at the nearby Vidöstern lake were much lower than usual. However, none of this seemed to phase the family’s eight-year-old Saga…
19. Incredible Discoveries
Life often hands the world’s greatest discoveries to some of the most unsuspecting individuals. For example, did you know that China’s Terracotta Warriors were discovered by a farmer during excavations for a well? Sometimes the universe just has a bigger plan that we’re not always aware of!
18. Just Swimming
Anyway, our story comes back to Saga Vanacek who was having a lot of fun swimming around in the lake, despite the low water levels. Even though the water levels were deep enough to swim in, there was also a lot of concrete showing up through the water. Saga and her father decided to place a marker on these areas in order to warn any passing boats.
17. Big Move
Recently, Saga and her parents relocated to Sweden from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Before their move to Sweden, Saga and her father had spent their entire lives in the United States. However, the family decided to move to Sweden so that Saga could be closer to her maternal family.
16. Growing Impatient
During their family vacation, Saga and Andy would soon come across a situation that would blow them both away. “I asked [her] to bring the [marker], but she was taking her time like a kid does, playing in the water,” Andy told The Local. “I was getting impatient as the World Cup final was about to start!”
15. Something Unusual
However, Saga was in no rush to get out of the water. As she was swimming around, she came into contact with something very strange. “I felt around with my hands and knees, when I noticed something that felt like a stick,” Saga told Sweden’s SVT News.
14. Amazing Discovery
“I was on the verge of throwing it away, but I didn’t,” Saga explained. “Then I picked it up and I said to my dad, ‘Dad! I’ve found a sword!’” At first, Saga’s dad was pretty confused by what his daughter was referring to.
13. Real Old Sword
At first, Saga’s father just assumed that his daughter was confused. He thought that Saga had just discovered an old branch or something. However, as he got closer to the object he soon realized that his daughter wasn’t mistaken. She had actually discovered an incredibly old sword!
12. Pulling The Sword
In a Facebook post, Andy described how all of the events turned out after Saga discovered the sword. “The next day, an archaeologist was on the scene, with goosebumps on her arms. She took photos of the sword. [She then] laid it in the water too make sure it didn’t decompose from being in the air for the first time in 1,000 years,” Andy wrote.
11. Quite Old
It seems that the sword is in fact 1,000 years old. According to the Jönköpings läns museum, where the sword is currently being kept, “It was incredibly well preserved.” Not only was the blade in great condition but so was the sheath!
10. No Clue
No one had any idea where the sword could have come from. However, this amazing discovery would soon greatly impact Saga. After all, this was a mind-blowing discovery for such a young girl.
9. Keeping Quiet
The Jönköpings läns museum asked Saga to keep quiet about the discovery for some time. “We asked Saga [not to tell anyone about the sword] because we were afraid that if this went public too soon, there would be a lot of people [at the lake], perhaps destroying our possibility of [of finding] things later,” Jönköpings läns museum’s Mikael Nordström explained.
8. Big Secret
So, how did Andy and Saga manage to keep quiet throughout the entire time? “I think maybe I found it harder to keep the secret than she did,” Andy told The Local. Saga however only told her best friend. It seems that keeping the sword a secret was well worth it because the museum came across another discovery.
7. Even Older
After examining the sword for quite some time, the archaeologists have actually revised the age of the sword. It seems that the sword is actually up to 1,500 years old! That means it may have been forged before the Viking era.
6. Telling Everyone
Finally, now that the secret was out, Saga could finally tell all of her friends about the discovery! “They thought is was very fun and interesting to know about my story,” she told The Local. Everyone was super impressed by Saga and her amazing discovery.
5. Making Headlines
Saga’s news story made headlines all around the world. She even became a bit of a celebrity on social media. However, she has received quite a nickname from people on the Internet…
4. Queen of Sweden
Many social media users have been fascinated by Saga’s discovery and have given her the nickname Queen of Sweden. Twitter user Thomas Lönnegren tweeted saying, “According to legend she is the Queen of all Viking territory. A new world order, Sweden back on top!”
Many people on the Internet had drawn comparisons between Saga and the legend of King Arthur. “She will get a saga written about her: The saga of Saga,” wrote Twitter user Jonathan. It seems that Saga has become quite a legend on the Internet.
2. Very Cool
So how does Saga feel about being an Internet sensation and coming across such a miraculous discovery? “It felt very cool and a bit scary,” she told SVT News. Even though she made such a cool discovery, she doesn’t have any future plans to be a archaeologist. She has stated that she’d rather be “a doctor, vet or an actor.”
For now the sword is being preserved and won’t be on display for another year. Although Saga won’t be able to ever hold the sword again, many people have been working hard to petition for a replica to be made for her!
