Michael Bastian of Michael Bastian NYC says that a layered look is a stylish look that he personally prefers over putting on a heavy coat. Bastian says that city-living requires you to always be moving, in and out of cars and buildings. Therefore, layering with heavier sport coat is both fashionable and functional. Below are some nifty fashion tips from Bastian.

  1. Start from the bottom layer, and go out. This means: shirt (first layer), sweater or light jacket (second layer), and topcoat (third layer).
  2. The hem of inner shirt must not poke out of the second layer. The best way to avoid this is to tuck in the shirt.
  3. Shirts should be simple; pinstriped or solid. Add a second layer of solid cashmere sweater; crewneck or V-neck will work.
  4. Put on an outer layer to cinch the look. Pick a jacket made of a fiber that has depth or heaviness to it.
  5. Limit the layers. If you find it difficult to move, this indicates you’re wearing too many layers to be functional. The purpose of the layer, remember, is to retain heat and adjust to variable surroundings. If you’re out in the cold, wear all your layers. When indoors, shed off a layer and still look fashionable.
  6. Even as you layer, make sure they’re of good fit. This is why a sport coat is preferable over heavier topcoats – the former is lighter and sleeker.

Layering should be both practical and stylish, adapting to man’s environment without compromising comfort and function.
