When one man purchased a home in a suburban area of Tucson, Arizona, he hoped that it would be his escape from the hectic ways of city life. However, he had no idea that his new home would actually open his life up to an extraordinary discovery. It seems that the man’s backyard held some creepy secrets and the man’s curiosity finally got the best of him. So he decided to start digging in his backyard and soon enough, he came across a discovery that sent chills down his spine…
20. New House
When John Sims bought himself a new home in Tucson, Arizona, he was incredibly excited to start a new chapter of his life. However, as he took the keys from the previous owner, who also happened to be his buddy, he heard some pretty startling news. It seems that the house had a mystery surrounding it…
19. Odd Rumors
It seems that the house that John just purchased had an odd mystery surround it. John’s friend let him know that there was apparently something buried deep underneath in the backyard. However, John’s friend never took out the time to actually investigate for himself.
It seems that his friend’s statements went a long way, because John was immediately curious about what could be lurking in the backyard. He decided that he would try to dig in the backyard and see if he could find anything. However, it wouldn’t be easy to complete the task under the hot Arizona sun.
It was summertime in Arizona and that meant that the sun was shining down and making it incredibly hot out. Still, John decided to head out and start digging with a shovel. So John began to dig and dig and dig for hours on end. However, his search came up dry…
John was pretty disappointed when his digging and searching didn’t lead him anywhere. He began to question if his friend had just been pulling his leg the whole time. However, John refused to give up and he decided that he would have to think of a new plan to locate whatever treasure was waiting for him.
15. House Records
John decided that he would begin by looking for the municipal records for his neighborhood in Tucson. Eventually, he came across the record of his house being built. According to the documents, the company Whitaker Pools built something in his backyard back in 1961. However, there was no pool in his backyard…
14. Metal Detectors
This time around, however, John decided that he would be more proactive with his searching. He decided to hire a company to come over and look through his backyard with metal detectors. So the team arrived with all of their equipment and got started on searching through the backyard.
13. Sounding Off
At first, the crew’s metal detectors didn’t sound off at all. It was particularly quiet in the backyard until they made their way over to one specific part of the backyard. Soon enough, not one but two of the metal detectors began to sound off. Finally, John knew exactly where to start digging!
12. Narrowed Search
With the help of the metal detectors, John would no longer have to blindly dig around in his backyard. The area was soon marked off and John began to dig. It wasn’t long before his shovel hit something…
11. Unexpected Discovery
Finally, John’s digging resulted in his shovel hitting against something metal. At first, John worried that it might just be a septic tank and he quickly began to regret digging so deep. However, at this point John was far too curious to not continue searching. So he began to proceed with caution.
10. An Entrance
It seems that John had come across a hatch that was an entrance to something. He brushed off the dirt covering the lid and began to try and pry it open. Soon enough, John had managed to get the lid open and was surprised by what he saw waiting for him inside.
As John peered down into the hole, he saw something that looked like blades. At first he was pretty intimidated, but then he realized that it was a spiral staircase. It seems that it led somewhere deep into the ground, however, John wasn’t about to go explore down there without some help!
8. A Team
As a fire department captain, John knew that it would be risky to explore on his own. Instead, he decided to assemble a team of friends to properly explore the area. Together with his buddies, they devised a plan to safely explore the area to see what was down there.
The first thing that they did was completely reconstruct the stairwell so that they could safely make their way down. They made sure to pour lots of concrete in order to stabilize the area. Since all of this was taking place during the summer, they also placed a large tent over the hole to protect themselves from the sun.
6. Fixing The Entrance
Finally, the men had finished widening the entrance so that they could enter in. Finally, it was time for them to go inside and see whatever mystery was waiting for them. Still, although they were able to secure the exterior of the entrance, the team wasn’t able to fix the rusted stairwell.
5. Rusty Stairs
Although they were able to fix the outer entrance, the stairs were still a risky part. They were completely covered in rust and there was no real way to rehab them. So instead of using them, he placed a ladder. Finally, he was inside and he was shocked by what he saw.
4. Underground Bunker
It seems that all of the hard work paid off because John was standing in the middle of an underground bomb shelter. It seems that Whitaker Pools had actually built it during a time when the Cold War was reaching high tensions. It seems that more people were looking for nuclear fallout shelters rather than pools.
John was blown away by just how huge the bomb shelter was. It seems that during the height of the Cold War, it wasn’t odd at all to have one installed in your backyard. In fact, it seems that Tucson, Arizona is actually filled with them.
2. Rocket Area
It seems that back in the day, Tucson held 18 different ballistic missiles. These missiles were capable of traveling across continents and each one was 110 feet in length and 10 feet across. However, with the threat of the Cold War gone, many of these missiles have been disabled.
1. Restoring It
John decided that instead of just leaving the bunker unused, that he would work to restore it. With the help of a GoFundMe, John was able to raise funds to create a bunker that houses Cold War memorabilia such as vintage HAM radios, Geiger counters, sanitation kits, and water supply barrels.
It’s now the ultimate man cave for John and his buddies!
