When one couple received the news that they were going to have a new baby, they were beyond ecstatic. Although the couple already have three other children, they were more than happy about the expansion. However, they had no idea how much things would change after they went to their first routine checkup and ultrasound. They soon discovered that they were going to have twins, however, these twins are more unique than any you’ve ever seen before.
Donna and Vince Aylmer, from Gloucester, England were incredibly excited when they found out that Donna was pregnant with another child. The couple were heading over to the doctor’s for their first routine checkup and ultrasound since finding out the news. However, they had no idea what they were about to find out next.
19. Two Tiny Dots
As the couple was looking at the ultrasound, they noticed something they had never seen before. It seems that there were two tiny dots on the screen and not just one. That’s when the doctor informed them that Donna was actually pregnant with twins! Although they already had three other kids they were just incredibly excited for their new babies to arrive.
18. Giving Birth
Finally, on January 16, 1997, Donna gave birth to two beautiful twin baby girls. However, when the midwife handed her the two babies, Donna was confused. In fact, she was downright speechless as she stared the two babies in the face.
17. Two Different Babies
As Donna looked at her two new babies she couldn’t understand what was going on. In one arm was a baby of a dark complexion with beautiful brown eyes. In the other arm was a snow white complexion baby with bright blue eyes and ginger hair. She named the brown eyed baby Maria and the blue eyed baby Lucy. However, why were her twins so different?!
Donna took her two beautiful daughters home and began to care for them, just like a mother would. She would even dress them up in matching outfits since they were twins, after all. However, strangers on the street would often stare and question if they were actually twins.
15. So Different
You see, Lucy with her red hair, milky complexion, and blue eyes could pass for someone of Irish ancestry. Maria, on the other hand, had a warm complexion with dark eyes and dark hair. It was no wonder that everyone was confused as to how the two girls were twins when they didn’t even look like they could be related.
Eventually, as the girls got older, their mother no longer dressed them in matching outfits. In fact, the girls were very adamant about establishing their own identity, After all, since they didn’t look like each other they didn’t want to have to dress like each other.
13. Different Personalities
However, it’s not just the girls looks that are different. In fact, they have entirely opposite personalities as well. “Maria was outgoing whilst I was the shy one,” Lucy revealed to Inside Edition. Lucy preferred the company of people she already knew while Maria was always out and about talking to everyone!
12. Super Different
As they grew up, the girls began to notice more and more how different they were. They also began to deal with people bullying them. For example, Maria hated her curly hair while Lucy hated her snow white complexion. So how was it possible that the couple had such different twins?
11. Biracial Twins
Lucy and Maria actually happen to be a unique case known as biracial twins. It seems that the chance of having biracial twins is about 1 in 500. That’s what makes this case so rare…
10. Other Children
When you look at the Aylmers’ other kids, George, Chynna, and Jordan, you can tell that they are of a darker complexion. However, they’re not as dark as Maria and they certainly aren’t as light as Lucy is. Still, although it is rare, biracial twins do happen.
9. Different Ethnicities
Vince is of Caucasian descent, while Donna is a half Jamaican and half white. This explains the difference in skin tone amongst their children. However, for a while, the couple was confused as to how the twins could be so different from each other in such a drastic manner.
8. The Science
However, once you look into the science aspect of the phenomena it starts to make more sense. Lucy and Maria are called non-identical twins because they formed from separate eggs in the womb. This means that they weren’t going to carry all of the same genes from one another.
7. Biracial Mother
Since Donna is also biracial herself, this meant that she was carrying both genes. Since the girls were formed from different eggs, they took different traits from their mother and father. This is what increased their chances of coming out so different looking!
6. Personal Style
Outside of looking different, these twins have also managed to craft their very own personal styles. Lucy loves to embrace edgier styles with dark makeup and piercings. Maria, on the other hand, loves to dress up in a more sophisticated style that mixes with bohemian.
5. Not As Close
The two twins admitted that they weren’t as close when they were younger. Lucy explained that the differences in the ways they looked might have been the cause of that. However, she says that the two of them are now closer than ever.
4. Strong Bond
“Now we have grown older, even though we still look so different, the bond between us is much stronger,” Lucy explained. The two of them have both learned to love themselves for their differences and accept themselves for who they are. So what are the twins up to now?
3. Different Careers
These days, the girls are both attending college, however, they are both studying entirely different things. Lucy enrolled at Gloucester as an art and design student, while Maria is studying law at Cheltenham College. The two of them are happily studying and keeping in touch.
2. Celebrating Themselves
For a majority of their lives, many people questioned if the girls were really twins. In fact, to this day many people still question them and assume that they are lying. However, neither one of them feels like they have anything to prove and are instead celebrating what makes them unique.
1. Similar & Different
Lucy and Maria have often stated that although they are quite different, what makes them so unique is that they are also very similar in a lot of ways. They are proud to be twin sisters and would never want to have it any other way.
