This very large bird resembles a certain someone that I used to know. But without getting into that, here are a few important facts about shoebills. They live in tropical east Africa, and were well known to ancient peoples of Egypt and Arabia. There are only about 5000 to 8000 shoebills left, due to habitat destruction and hunting.
