Play Your Cards Right: Design Smart Business Cards

Brand consultant Nora Richardson says that a business card can sometimes spell the difference between success and failure of a business. Business cards carry with them the tangible representation of professionalism. Here are important tips for designing your business card:

  1. Pick materials that make a statement. Choose a heavy and solid medium: at least 300gsm cards, plastic or even wood.
  2. Don’t limit the shape of your business card to rectangular. You can soften the edges or take a curious shape for visual impact.
  3. Make contact information stand out. Provide more than the usual phone numbers: include social media info, websites, and email addresses.
  4. Choose a font that will propel the eyes to your card. Try this with a deluge of cards you have accumulated; lay them on the table and see which font gets your attention.
  5. Finish with a flare. After putting all the vital information into the card, finish it smartly. Matte provides good texture and interesting finish.
  6. Leave a mark that lasts. There must be something in the card that makes it easy to remember. Try something that others seldom use in their cards. Be bold with colours, embossing, texture, material and/or fonts.
