Okay right off let’s get this out of the way that drinking alcohol is not for everyone, and in excess it’s not for anyone. That being said, here are some pretty awesome reasons why drinking tequila can actually be good for you. Do keep in mind that in the U.S. alcohol is allowed to be labeled as “tequila” if it is 51 percent real agave…but can be 49 percent other alcohols which do not necessarily have the same health properties that agave does. Look for “100 percent agave” labels to be sure you’re getting the good stuff.

Weight Loss

What empty calories? The sugar in tequila called agavins can actually help you lose weight, as long as you’re drinking in moderation. The molecular structure of the sugars are different than most and they don’t end up raising the blood sugar the way that other sugars do. Additionally they might be able to boost the metabolism and help dissolve fats.

Digestion

Tequila is sometimes used as a digestive aid, since it is a good source of probiotics. Probiotics are the healthy bacteria that we need in our intestines, and drinking tequila is one way to get some of them. Getting plenty of probiotics have been shown to boost the immune system. But of course keep in mind that drinking excessively drags down the immune system since the body is forced to use energy and work overtime to rid the body of toxins.

Tequila is also a prebiotic, which means that it can make the intestines a good place for the healthy bacteria to grow.

It Can Increase Calcium Absorption

Some studies have found that tequila might be able to increase the rate that the body absorbs calcium, which means it could actually help protect your bones and even decrease the risk of osteoporosis.

It Can Boost the Effectiveness of Certain Prescription Drugs

Generally it is advised not to drink while taking prescription drugs (or while sick), but when it comes to drugs that help with Crohn’s Disease, IBS, and colitis, it might actually help. The fructans in tequila can help transport to the drugs to the colon without being affected by the stomach acid. Check with your doctor before mixing any pill with alcohol.

It Might Help You Sleep

A nightcap isn’t always a terrible idea. Tequila might be able to help you relax, and ultimately fall asleep faster if you have a shot before bedtime. Tequila has a bit of a reputation for amping people up, but perhaps that’s only after multiple shots hit the system, or something.

It Might Help Prevent Type II Diabetes

Since the fruit sugar in tequila does not spike the blood sugar, it passes through the body while encouraging the production of insulin. This also means that some diabetics might be able to handle drinking tequila while other alcohols are off limits. But again, check with the doctor before adding any booze to your health plan, or before self diagnosing anything for that matter.
