The Americans with Disabilities Act became law in 1990. The public accommodations aspect of the law was extremely important because it required cities and businesses to make their buildings accessible to people with physical impairments. Despite the ADA, there are still places, which aren’t accessible to the disabled. When a person realizes they can’t go somewhere because they can’t get inside the facility, it is extremely frustrating. For one mother and her disabled son, getting home from a hockey game became a major ordeal. Then a hero cop stepped up to save the day.

Monica Ward Scharrer is from Mount Sinai, New York. Her son Chris was born with cerebral palsy. He uses a wheelchair for mobility, but the chair’s size and 350-pound weight sometimes make it challenging to maneuver around. This does not stop Chris from having adventures. He relies on his chair to make this possible.
