It is important to learn self defense, so in case someone tries to attack you, you can easily shift to a fighting mode and show your attacker what you are made out of. You can learn different types of submission holds like the rear naked choke, the front guillotine, and the hip-throw/arm-lock combo. You can use these techniques when you are out on the street and faced with an attacker, or you can use these techniques in a friendly but competitive MMA match.

What these Moves can Do

If these MMA submission holds are performed correctly, you can make your opponent submit because of pain or too much pressure that he could barely move. It is true that these moves are very violent because of the force they use against the opponents, but these competitive moves also involve art. The fighters use force with precision to be able to tap out the opponent.

Below are some techniques that you may want to practice, in case you are tough enough to undergo such a rigorous training:

  • Rear naked choke

This is one of the basic holds that you need to learn. It is done behind the opponent. If the opponent is facing away, the fighter will wrap an arm around the neck of his opponent with his forearm pushing against one side of the neck and the bicep against the other side. This will cause some choking on the part of the opponent causing him to submit.

  • The front guillotine

One of the submission holds that you need to learn is the front guillotine. This is also a choke hold, and the purpose of this hold is to disallow air from entering the system of your opponent. It can also be a blood choke where you stop the blood from flowing to the head. You need to grab the neck of your opponent and then pull his head across your chest. This will reduce or stop the flow of blood and air to the head of your opponent. Then lock his arm to arms together so it will cause him to have difficulty fighting you, and then apply pressure upwards.

  • Hip-throw/arm-lock combo

This hold is one of the submission holds you can perform against your opponent to make him tap out. First, you need to place your hand on his biceps and your knee on his ribs. This will make it difficult to move and fight back. Then, grab your own wrist and squeeze to apply more pressure.

  • Omoplata variation

This technique will not allow you to grab his hips. You need to place your foot in his armpit with your triangle locked so he will not be able to roll. Then place both of your hands on the floor and scoot your hips away from him. Then straighten both of your legs and your opponent will not be able to move. The idea is to apply pressure with your legs and not so much with your arms to cause submission.

Those are some of the submission holds that you need to master in order to win a battle in an MMA match, or help you defend yourself.
