Harry Potter fans all around the world are getting incredibly hyped over the new trailer of “Fantastic Beast: The Crimes of Grindelwald.” The reason? Well, apparently the film opens up a whole new plethora of theories regarding the Harry Potter books. You’ll be blown away when you find out about all of the secrets that this new trailer is hiding!
20. Building Up Hype
Harry Potter fans are going wild over the new Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald film. The story takes place before Harry Potter was even born and features some of the book’s most beloved characters, like Albus Dumbledore. However, it seems that the reason for all of the hype has stemmed from a recently released trailer. The trailer revealed a specific character’s backstory and everyone was shocked by what they saw!
The film is a prequel to all of the Harry Potter series and that’s what makes it so special. The Crimes of Grindelwald follows along a storyline that was mentioned in the books but not really touched upon too deeply. It happens to be the tale of Dumbledore’s fight against the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, Voldemort’s precursor. In the film, actor Jude Law plays Young Dumbledore, and Johnny Depp stars as Grindelwald.
18. Covering A lot
The new film also covers the story of Newt, the protagonist of the Fantastic Beasts franchise. The storyline of the new film is going to delve into the relationship between Newt and Leta Lestrange. There will also be storylines following his brother Theseus. However, we must now warn you that there will be spoilers ahead!
17. Unexpected Character
However, a trailer for the new film has had fans sitting on the edge of their seats. It all started with a character played by Avengers: Age of Ultron actress, Claudia Kim. According to the website Pottermore, Kim’s character was described as “a mysterious woman with no name.” Thus, leaving everyone guessing…
16. New Title
However, as more information came about, it was revealed that Kim’s character gained the title of “Maledictus.” Fans then began to throw around various conspiracies, since the term Maledictus refers to a person cursed that has then been transformed into an animal in the Potterworld. However, there is one animal in particular that is quite important in the Potter universe and that is Voldemort’s snake Nagini.
At first, everyone thought that this idea was way too far-fetched to be true. However, it soon was revealed that the conspiracies were right! The final trailer for The Crimes of Grindelwald revealed that Nagini was in fact originally Kim’s character. This was an upsetting revelation, as any Harry Potter fan knows that Nagini is destined to become a controlled animal. The saddest part is that she would later turn into a Horcrux, and then be tragically killed.
14. Interesting Role
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kim revealed her thoughts about the role. “It will be so interesting to see another side of Nagini,” she said. “You’ve only seen her as a Horcrux. In this, she’s a wonderful and vulnerable woman who wants to live. She wants to stay a human being and I think that’s a wonderful contrast to the character.”
13. Transformation Powers
Kim also explained how during The Crimes of Grindelwald, Nagini was able to switch in and out of snake form. However, that would all change later down the line. “She is bound to [permanently] transform at some point to a beast so she feels this pressure that the clock is ticking,” Kim explained.
At the start of the film, Nagini is simply the friend of Credence Barebone, a tormented young man who almost destroyed all of New York in the first film. “It’s amazing these two broken souls are able to form some kind of friendship within the circus,” Kim explained. “Credence is special to her because he encourages her to use her power.”
However, when Entertainment Weekly asked Kim about Nagini’s magic abilities she wouldn’t go into too much detail. “She has powers that are yet to be explored. I can’t confirm she has powers like wizards have. And she doesn’t have a wand. I’ve been very careful and aware that I should not spoil it for anybody. But I’ve been dying to say something!”
10. J.K. Rowling’s Word
Eventually, J.K. Rowling decided to clarify everything on Twitter for all of the fans that were asking dozens of questions! For starters, everyone was dying to know how long Rowling had known that Nagini was first a human. “Only for around twenty years,” Rowling stated. “The Maledictus carries a blood curse from birth, which is passed down from mother to daughter.”
9. Controversial Topic
While it is a highly interesting angle that Rowling chose to go in, many fans have questioned her motive. In fact, it started a huge controversy online. “Does J.K. Rowling not have a single friend who could have pointed out the problem with making an Asian woman end up in permanent servitude to an evil white guy?” writer Desirée Annis Miranda wrote on Medium.
Others said that the choice to make an Asian character a snake led to an offensive stereotype of the “dragon lady.” “Nagini is literally an Asian woman who transforms into a scaly reptilian creature. […] The parallel is pretty obvious,” Megan C. Hills wrote in Marie Claire.
7. Addressing Criticism
J.K. Rowling once again headed to Twitter to address all of the grievances from many of the fans. “The Naga are snake-like mythical creatures of Indonesian mythology, hence the name ‘Nagini.’ They are sometimes depicted as winged, sometimes as half-human, half-snake,” she explained.
6. Still More Critics
“Indonesia comprises a few hundred ethnic groups, including Javanese, Chinese and Betawi,” Rowling stated. However, her explanation was also met with some harsh criticism. Author Amish Tripathi wrote to Rowling stating that “the Naga mythology emerged from India. It travelled to Indonesia with the Indic/Hindu empires that emerged there in the early Common Era, with the influence of Indian traders and Rishis/Rishikas who travelled there. Nagin is a Sanskrit language word.”
5. Lack of Portrayal
The lack of Asian portrayal in Hollywood has been a hot topic for a while now. No Asian has won an Oscar since Haing S. Ngor took home his in 1985. One of the other key issues surrounding being represented is that often times, the Asian actors are always stuck portraying characters of Asian origins.
Another big issue is the “whitewashing” of Asian characters by white actors. Recently, Scarlett Johansson’s starring role in the manga adaption of Ghost in the Shell faced heavy controversy. Many couldn’t understand why they had chosen to go with a white actress, although many believe that the decision was profit-based.
“In cases like these, you could be forgiven for thinking that white screenwriters are damned if they do, damned if they don’t. Had a Caucasian actor been cast in the role [of Nagini], you could imagine that journalists like me would be writing censorious pieces about white-washing and the cultural appropriation of Asian mythology,” writer Biba Kang explained.
2. Main Problem
“If Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald didn’t have a largely white cast – if it starred actors of color in all manner of roles – then Kim’s casting wouldn’t have needed to come under such heavy scrutiny,” Kang wrote. “When there are only a couple of non-white characters to choose from, a racially stereotypical portrayal is unlikely to be a coincidence.”
As for now, Kim has not spoken out about any of the controversies. Still, there’s no telling what will actually happen with Nagini’s character until the movie is out. For now, we can only wait to find out!
