Things to Consider When Wearing a Bowtie

When wearing a bowtie, you need to consider some things to make sure that it doesn’t look off or overdone. Use the following list as a great guide in buying bowties.

Occasion

If you are buying a bowtie for a specific occasion, make sure that it does suit the event. There are different styles and cuts of bowties so choose one that doesn’t look too showy when you are attending a formal event. But if the occasion calls for a vivacious outfit, you can try on something that is more stylish.

Size

When you wear a bowtie, you should consider your height to the size of the bowtie. Bowties have different sizes so do not just grab one. Make sure that the size fits your height and your build so that it will complement your suit, not hang on your neck like an oversized necklace.

Cut

Bowties have different cuts at the edges, such as triangular ones and diamond-shaped ones. Choose one that matches your personality.

Season

You also have to consider the season when you wear a bowtie. Match the color of your bowtie to the season.

Wearing a Bowtie

Now that you know how to shop for a bowtie, here is a step by step guide on how to wear one.

Prepping the Collar

The first step in wearing a bowtie is to pop up your collar then drape your bowtie. Offset it so the right side is longer than the left.

Tying

Now, to wear a bowtie properly, cross the bowtie by putting the left bowtie in the front. Then, slide the longer end of the bowtie up the hole near your neck. Pull it through so that the longer end is upwards while the shorter end is facing downwards.

Fold the bottom side of the bowtie horizontally so that its end is facing your left side. Then, drop the longer end of the bowtie and fold half of the horizontal side of the bowtie in half. Pinch the folded side of the bowtie so that you can slide the hanging side through the hole at the back of the horizontally folded end. Fold down your collar and you’re done.

When you are planning to wear a bowtie, make sure that you practice wearing it days before the big event. This way, when the day finally arrives, you know how to properly wear it and would not end up spending half of your night fitting and re-fitting your bowtie because it just doesn’t feel right.

Also, remember to buy bowties that match the suits that you already own. Take note of your suit’s color and cut so that you can easily choose a bowtie that matches with it.
