When the original architect of the White House was fired by George Washington, Washington decided to hold a contest to see who could come up with the best designs. However, Washington has no idea that future president Thomas Jefferson actually submitted a design under a pseudonym. It seems that Jefferson was hoping to collect the $500 ($12,700 today) prize.
