You might notice that some meals don’t seem to affect your body at all while others leave you feeling bloated and extremely uncomfortable. This can vary from person to person and food to food. Here are some things to consider if certain foods are leaving you feeling less than settled.

If You Have a Food Sensitivity

Some people have full on food allergies which can become very apparent pretty quickly because the symptoms are usually stronger, but food sensitivities can fly under the radar a little more because the signs are more mild and we can get used to them and assume that they are normal.

To find out if you really have a food sensitivity one of the best things that you can do is to try out an elimination diet where you cut out each potential inflammatory food one at a time for a period of time before reintroducing it and seeing how it affects you. If nothing happens when you reintroduce it than there is no problem. If something does, then you know which food is bothering you.

You can also get allergy tests which can help, particularly for things like lactose, fructose, and inulin. Inulin is a dietary fiber that is found in a variety of foods including wheat and onions.

Check For Candida

Another reason why people can experience bloating after meals has to do with having a candida overgrowth in the body. This can occur for a variety of reasons, but commonly happens when people eat too much sugar or when they take a lot of antibiotics. Taking antibiotics of course kills off  lot of the bad bacteria in the body, but it can also kill off the good kinds of bacteria which we need to keep our digestive system healthy. When it is thrown off balance this can cause gas and bloating, and difficulties with food digestion.

To restore balance to the body one of the suggested things to do is to take probiotic supplements, which can help put some of that good bacteria back into the body. Avoiding foods that are high in added sugar can help as well.

Know What Affects Your Body

Each body is different, and sometimes we don’t know why a certain food affects us a certain way it just does. Common triggers for bloating in some people include caffeine, tomatoes, refined sugar, processed flour, any other highly processed foods. In general it is good to eliminate overly processed and sugary foods from the diet as much as possible, so dealing with some bloating can actually be a good way to change your diet for the better when the time comes.

Of course overeating in general can cause bloating, so if you are eating to the point of being full before you stop you might be overdoing it. It takes a few minutes for the stomach to register as being full, so  it is advisable to stop eating when you are getting full, not once you already are.
