A research conducted at Dartmouth College showed that people raised the arsenic content of their body by 30% when they consume 2.5 bottles of beer on the average per day. That sounds like a sinister plot from a psycho-murder movie.

What is Arsenic?

Arsenic is a poisonous compound that slowly kills a person. But unknown to most people, arsenic does not only come from scheming murderers; they can come from fish,brussels sprouts, and rice. Researchers found out about this by testing clippings from toenails, which can help indicate long-term exposure. Arsenic can be found in the environment and even in the ground water. Once it enters the ground water, it can become more hazardous to humans by finding its way to the tap and the foods grown by people.

Arsenic Poisoning

Arsenic poisoning doesn’t happen overnight; instead it accumulates in the system of humans. People who restrict their diet to particular kinds of food that may be exposed to arsenic will increase their risk by prolonged concentrated diet of the same food. It takes 5 years or more before symptoms of exposure will begin to show. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), arsenic exposure can lead to cancer, kidney failure, skin lesions and death.

Research Findings

Lead researcher Kathryn Cottingham, Ph.D., recommends that we must eat varied food from different food sources, since we will not always know which foods are contaminated because arsenic can occur naturally in the environment. Keep a healthy diet, and load up on antioxidants and vitamins A, B, C, E, B2 or riboflavin, and folic acid. A study conducted at Columbia University found that these nutrients could lower risks of arsenic-induced skin lesions by 68%.
