Scott Lowe of IGN says that even with the update, Apple TV still doesn’t make it to the top of the competition.

Apple TV works with AirPlay to stream content from your iOS, or mirror what your display shows to the HDTV. With the tandem, you can pore on your photos, watch movie blockbusters, and your favourite games and videos from your device to the wide screen.

So, what’s new with Apple TV? Its appearance is the same as when it was released in 2010. The matte-and-glossy casing and the various ports are exactly what and where they were in the earlier edition. The changes come from the single-core A5 processor, the integrated 802.11 Wi-Fi receiver, and the 8GB flash storage.

With the new processor, the gadget now supports 1080p video and HD Netflix videos. Comparing the updated and the earlier versions, the new Apple TV connects faster and buffering time is significantly shorter. Visual and image quality are cleaner and clearer. Performance will, naturally, vary with connection speed.

The most compelling reason to buy this new device is its iCloud integration feature. This means that if you have a movie purchased via your iTunes account, it becomes only a matter of streaming it to your TV with Apple TV. The same is true with a digital copy of a Blu-ray; you can view it from your MacBook, your phone, or your home TV. That’s unified service at its most versatile!

So why is Apple TV not the best? First off, Apple TV must compete with its own namr. Apple TV doesn’t have the total feel of Apple – media browsing is still not as streamlined as desirable, and far from the sleek and effortless qualities Apple represents. Third-party services are not as hassle-free as Apple’s first-party offerings, although they have made leaps to make Netflix subscription a breeze. The previous version’s user interface was text-heavy; fortunately, the later version uses current app-style icons.

If you’re a frequent user of Amazon Instant Video, HBOGO and Hulu Plus, you might as well get the equally-priced Roku 2 because it can get you through those sites with no problem. You’ll be fine with Apple TV if iTunes, YouTube, Vimeo, and Netflix are all that you require for video content and home entertainment.

The new Apple TV is priced the same as its predecessor, making it a good buy considering that it has been much improved. It’s more refined, works faster, and features are much enhanced with iCloud and its friendlier user interface. Visuals are great on the big screen with the Airplay app. The 1080p video output is definitely an advantage for those thinking about upgrading. While Apple TV clearly doesn’t lead the competition, it could be the right device to serve your needs.
