A legend may speak of James as being like an 1800 version of Robin Hood. However, there has never been any proof that he used the money he stole for anyone other than himself.

A legend says that James actually survived his supposed killing, being that Robert Ford shot someone else. Nevertheless, no story of his survival ever held true, and enough evidence has been found that proves he really did die.
