5. Baby M Case

One of the best-known examples of surrogacy gone wrong was the “Baby M” case of 1986, in which a traditional surrogate—a woman who supplies the egg and carries the intended parents’ child—decided during the pregnancy that she wanted physical custody of the baby after giving birth. The woman kidnapped the child. Eventually the contract was deemed invalid. The parents got custody, but the woman got visitation.
