15. The Financial Crisis
Many experts believe the millions of stray dogs in Greece are strongly linked to the financial crisis that Greece has been experiencing. According to GR Reporter, “This is one of the side effects of the crisis with incalculable results.” According to animal protection NGOs, the number of stray animals in Greece has increased dramatically over the past four years, approaching 3 million, i.e. 50% more than in 2011. With that dramatic of an increase, we’re only going to see more and more helpless animals fill the streets of Greece.
