What is the deal with spotting? I’ve had some guys get pissed if I help them too much and some guys yell while struggling for me to help them more. It’s like I can’t please anybody and they should do it themselves. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. – Nico from Georgia

It all depends on the persons goals. Powerlifters don’t want you to touch the bar unless it’s about to fall on their neck. Bodybuilders often want you to help them, though, because they want to stress the muscle as much as possible, even past the point of failure. The best thing you can do is ask the person you are spotting for their personal preference.

Communication is key. Ask them what they want beforehand. Do they want a liftoff? Do they want help going down and up? Etc.
For example, I always give someone a speech before they spot me because I don’t want them to fuck anything up. (Which invariably happens if I don’t educate them beforehand.)
