Tying knots is one of the survival skills that every man should know. Even though this may seem simple and trivial to many, this should not be neglected as this can serve an important role in preventing accidents. And even though you will not use this skill for survival purposes but for camping and other functions, you should learn how to properly do this so that you can prevent accidents and inconvenience on your part.

Tying knots to secure your stuff can be hard if you don’t know how to do it properly. The untying process will also be too hard because the tying process is not proper. So, when planning a trip or any activity that will require tying of stuff to one another, better be familiar with proper knot tying to make things easier.

How to Tie a Knot

Overhand and Half Hitch Knot

Before learning how to do proper knot tying, it is good to know how to do the overhand knot and the half hitch knot. Because these two kinds of knots will be the ones you will use to tie ropes to fasten things together, you need to be familiar with these two first.

The overhand knot is the most basic knot that everyone knows; you probably just don’t know what it’s called. Tying knots involve this method so you should be familiar with it. You just have to wrap the rope around itself then pull tight.

The half hitch knot, on the other hand, is just having the rope wrapped around something and maintaining the tension then crossing both tails of the rope to one another. To finish the half hitch knot, you have to make an overhand knot while maintaining the tension on the half hitch knot.

Lashing

Lashing is the knot tying technique that you should use when fastening stuff to one another, such as packing your camping gear on top of your car. This includes the knot tying methods mentioned above so it is quite easy to do. After learning this, you will realize that tying knots is very simple.

Make a Loop

Make a loop on one end of the rope by doing an overhand knot.

Wrap Your Stuff with the Rope

Pass the loop on the car rack then pass it through the top of the stuff that you are packing on top of your car. Pass the loop on the rack on the other side of the car then bring it back to the other rack by passing it back again through your stuff.

Tie the Rope

Grab the other tail of your rope and pass it through the loop. Pull the rope tight until your stuff is placed snugly on top of your car. Do two half hitches on the rope then make an overhand knot to fasten all the ropes together and you are done.

Tying knots may seem like a lot of work if you don’t know how to do it properly. But if you will learn this simple technique, this seemingly tiring task will be as easy as pie.
