Tying a bowtie doesn’t seem easy. Because bowties are not part of most people’s everyday outfit, not many people have the skills to tie a bowtie. However, knowing how to tie one is quite advantageous, particularly in situations where wearing black attire is necessary. So, let’s learn how to tie a bowtie!

You need to practice. You have to memorize all of the procedures in this instruction guide, so that you’ll be able to do it on your own, without looking at any instructions or how-to videos.
Tying a bowtie is simple if you know how to do it.

- Place the bowtie on your neck with the right end longer than the other.
- Cross the right end over the shorter end. Make sure that you cross over near your neck, so that your bowtie won’t hang loose on your neck. You won’t be able to adjust the tightness of your bowtie later, so make sure you adjust it to your preferred fit.
- Then, bring the longer (right) end beneath the shorter (left) end. Bring the longer end out from the center. This will give you a simple knot.
- Fold the shorter end horizontally and put the longer end across the folded end (downward).
- Now, bring the longer end beneath the (folded) shorter end, and insert it on the loop behind the knot that you’ve made.
- Insert the longer end on the loop or knot by feeding it from the left to the right side of the knot.
Some Tips
- Use thick bowties to have a thick knot.
- Practice first on your thigh so you can see what you’re doing. This will also prevent your arm from getting numb, as this position is less tiring for the arm and hand.
- You can adjust the bow’s size and angle by pulling the sides. To loosen, pull the front right and back left end. To tighten the bow, pull the back right end and the front left end.
- Pull the collar of your tuxedo shirt upwards while you tie a bowtie, so it won’t get in the way.
- Don’t forget to button up your tuxedo shirt before tying your bowtie, so you don’t have to ruin your bowtie to button up your shirt after you’re done tying.
- Practice on different kinds of bowties: large butterfly bowties, classic bowties, pointed end bowties, or narrow bowties.
