On January 22, 1944, British and American troops landed on the shores of Italy near Anzio and Nettuno.
Germany had barely any fighting power there, so the American and British troops were able to easily complete many of their objectives. This allowed to move 4 miles inland in a short amount of time. However, instead of taking the initiative to use the lack of German preparation to their advantage, the troops decided to wait on moving toward Rome. This allowed the Germans to prepare and led to one of the bloodiest fights in the war.
